I feel like not enough people make these just because they don't SOUND awesome. I mean, right? CABBAGE ROLLS?! Sounds kinda gross, dude. But if you trust me, you should go out on a limb and try these! You can add any flavors or types of meat you like, but the combination I used here was really tasty, and extremely savory because of the mushrooms and little bit of soy sauce rather than just salt! And the gravy is good enough to put on just about anything.
Cabbage Rolls with Caramelized Onion Gravy Recipe
For the filling:
- 1 lb ground beef (about 80/20)
- 1 lb ground pork (about 80/20)
- 1/2 large onion, grated
- 4-5 cloves minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon grated ginger
- 5-6 diced mushrooms of your choice
- 1 jalapeno pepper, diced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- ~14 Napa cabbage leaves
For the gravy:
- 1 1/2 large onions, sliced
- 1 cup beef stock or broth
- pan drippings from cooked cabbage rolls
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of corn starch dissolved in cold water
